Greek House
Alumni News
Greeks began moving to this area as the
copper mines opened. They mainly settled in
McGill, building a Greek Church there as well
as one in Ely.

In 1910 Greeks numbered ten percent of the
population of White Pine County with the
population listed as 744. They worked hard to
teach their children the Greek language and
culture. The Greeks that lived in Ely were mostly
business owners. The McGill Greeks worked
mostly in the smelter or the mine. They share
their culture with Greek festivals of food, wine,
and dancing.

This house was lovingly decorated by Irene
and John Chachas and features many donated
items from local Greek families. This house
features the prints of the Greek Mural by local
artist Anthony Ithurralde.  Marietta and A.G.
