Spanish House
The Spanish people came to this
area first from New Mexico. The
families were extremely
hardworking. They devoted
themselves to their mines as well
as building the rails for the railroad.
By the 1940’s half of the town of
Reipetown was Hispanic.
Spanish Basques also arrived in
the area to work as sheepherders,
coming from the four provinces in
the Basque country called Southern
Basque Country. Like their French
counterparts, many became owners
of ranches, businesses, and shared
their culture with Basque festivals.
This house was decorated by
Lenora and Phil Leibold, as Lenora’
s family, the Lujans came to the
area to work in the mines. Lenora
created a popular cookbook with
many Spanish and other ethnic
original recipes. The cookbook is
sold in our General Store.

The kitchen was the heart of the
home. Here colorful fabrics, strings
of chilies, and flowers brighten up
the house. Meat grinder attached to
the cupboard made chopping meat
easier.
